Todd Bentley the blogger?

I haven’t been following blogs about Todd Bentley recently, largely because they are so often full of speculative nastiness. But my eye was caught by a post at Onward, Forward, Toward… because it linked to one of my posts. And there I found some interesting information which seems to be more than speculation. It is certainly true that someone has set up a Myspace page in Todd’s name. This appears to be new, with a signup date of 16th December 2008.

I cannot confirm what is stated in the post, that the Myspace page has been set up by Todd himself, or at least by someone acting on his behalf. There is surely the possibility that this is an unofficial page set up by someone wanting to blacken Todd’s name even further – or my a misguided supporter. But it does look quite genuine.

What I discovered is that linked to this Myspace page there is a blog. Now the Myspace blogging software is so poor that the link to View Todd’s Blog leads to an almost unreadable page. But there are three posts there, all dated 16th December 2008, which can be read if accessed individually. And they do appear to be genuine writings by Todd, although not necessarily new ones.

PJ Miller, who has also posted about Todd’s new Myspace page, claims that

You won’t find anything on his page concerning his recent troubles–including his separation, impending divorce [he lists himself as ‘single’] or the fact he is continuing to live in adultery.

The fact here is not the presumption that Todd is continuing to live in adultery (for which the only evidence offered is that one of his Myspace friends is allegedly the woman with whom he has admitted an inappropriate relationship). The fact is that there is in the Myspace blog material relevant to Todd’s personal situation, although not explicitly about it. For two of Todd’s three posts are about Restoration. Here is an extract from this post, based on Isaiah 61:2-4:

Actually, did you know that it’s one thing to loose and undo the work of the devil—it’s one thing to be set free—but it’s another thing to have God restore back in your life all the damage that was done because of the oppression of the enemy?! In other words, just think for a moment about the alcoholic that gets set free, and we thank God for that. But what about all the aftermath—the damage that the alcoholism did to the children and others—or the drug addict that’s now free, but the family is still broke?

The fact is, there are testimonies of people that have come into notable freedom, yet there still remain lingering negative consequences. But biblical restoration cuts off those negative consequences! That’s because, when God restores, one: He brings an increase; two: He multiplies beyond where you were; and three: He adds the extra, making it better than it was before. Look at Job. When God restored Job, He gave him double (Job 42:10). In fact, you cannot be touched by the anointing of restoration and, for example, just get your money back at the same measure. It’s not just recovery of a former condition. No! You’re not going back to a former state. You’re going back to better! I mean, when God restores, say double, it’s everything double—life, joy, and revelation, and much more!

Is this the kind of restoration Todd is looking for? Indeed God can restore him from his current brokenness and give him an anointing that is double even that which was poured out at Lakeland. But one prerequisite for that is repentance. There is no mention of that in this article, although it is a start for Todd to recognise “the oppression of the enemy” in what has happened to him. What we do read is that when Todd was praying for his father to be saved God

revealed to me that my dad had made certain choices and he wanted the darkness. That being the case God was prevented from breaking in to help him.

Todd has also reportedly made certain choices, to live in a sinful way, which prevent God from restoring him. If he seeks restoration, first he needs to make different choices. The details of what he needs to do are known only to his close advisers. But it must include turning away from any inappropriate relationship with his former nanny and seeking reconciliation with his wife and children.

New home page

I haven’t disappeared! But I have been busy, also lacking inspiration to blog although I did post this at Better Bibles Blog.

I realised that my home page was woefully out of date, so I have replaced it with a redirect to a new page at this blog with an updated version of the same material. This includes links to various articles I have written, some of which (specifically the four most recent Baddow Life articles) are in the form of new pages on this blog.

Meanwhile here, largely as a test, is a widget which has been written to allow access to Better Bibles Blog, which doesn’t seem to work on that blog itself as it is hosted at wordpress.com, but is likely to work here as this is a self-hosted blog:

I'm a Thinker, says Typealyzer

Mike writes:

I think it was last week, or the week before that the Typalyzer went around for the analysis of personality types in the blogosphere.

Did it? I missed it. But I have taken the test now – that is, I have submitted my URL. And on the basis of this blog it classifies my (Myers-Briggs) personality type as INTP. That’s not bad at all for such a simple test – Language Log suggests how it might work.

A more sophisticated personality type test which I took last year classified me as ISTP, the same result as I obtained in about 2000. But last year I was only weakly S (sensing) rather than N (intuitive). And in the past year I have been quite deliberately working on developing the intuitive side of my personality. So it would not surprise me that if I took the full test again I would now come out as INTP.

So perhaps the Typealyzer is spot on, at least with its overall personality type. I don’t think it is right with its details, presented graphically (and in a way I can’t easily reproduce, but you can all repeat the test with http://www.qaya.org/blog/), which suggest that my brain activity is very strongly N and hardly at all S. As for its description of what I am like, I think it does rather well:

INTP – The Thinkers

The logical and analytical type. They are especialy attuned to difficult creative and intellectual challenges and always look for something more complex to dig into. They are great at finding subtle connections between things and imagine far-reaching implications.

They enjoy working with complex things using a lot of concepts and imaginative models of reality. Since they are not very good at seeing and understanding the needs of other people, they might come across as arrogant, impatient and insensitive to people that need some time to understand what they are talking about.

It’s amazing what can be deduced from a rather small sample of my writing! And, while I try to be gentle, I apologise if I ever “come across as arrogant, impatient and insensitive”.

But what does Typealyzer have to say about some of my fellow bloggers? Mike also comes out as an INTP Thinker; so does Eddie Arthur. David Ker, according to his LIngamish blog, is an ISFP Artist. TC Robinson is INFP, an Idealist. Roger Mugs is ISTP, a Mechanic. I submitted several other blogs which all gave one of these four types. So I was beginning to wonder if the results would all be of the IXXP type – Typealyzer might simply assume that anyone who blogs is introverted and “perceiving”. But at last I found exceptions in Dave Walker: his (now dormant) Cartoon Blog classifies him as ISTJ, a Duty Fulfiller, but his Church Times blog has him as ESTP, a Doer. Well, unless Dave has multiple personalities, this appears to show that Typealyzer is not very consistent. Perhaps it was just a lucky guess that it pigeonholed me more or less right.

Google Blog Search relaunched – but it doesn't work!

The IT news service ZDnet reports that yesterday Google relaunched their Blog Search service, and claims “now it’s useful”.

I disagree. In fact Google Blog Search seems to have stopped working. Up to 22nd September I was receiving almost daily alerts about other blogs which were linking to this one. But these alerts stopped suddenly on that day. The WordPress dashboard and statistics page also rely on Google Blog Search and so have not detected any new incoming links for more than a week. I have also checked with a direct search and this has failed to find any new links.

I don’t know how many links to this blog Google Blog Search should have found, because I don’t know about them. But it should at least have found the link at Biblical Studies Carnival XXXIV, and for the last few months there have been at least three links a week. My blog may have been sent trackbacks from other blogs linking here, but I have received 4,545 of these in the last 15 days which have been caught by Akismet as spam, and I don’t have time to look through these which are mostly drug adverts for the occasional genuine link.

Here is another post which linked to me which Google did not find: More on the weevils of Todd Bentley. I just found this with a blog search for “gentle wisdom”, but this works only because Kathi included my blog name as well as a URL.

If you have linked to my blog (not with spam!) but I have not acknowledged this in any way, I am sorry. This is probably because I have not even seen the link. You are welcome to point out to me any link in a comment here, or by e-mail to peter AT qaya DOT org.

Cutting down on blogging

My life has been getting busier in recent weeks, as tends to happen in September. And I want to spend more of my limited spare time with real friends. But I have also been finding an increasing number of posts on the blogs I like to read. I don’t have time to keep up with reading them, let alone commenting when I want to, as well as writing my own posts.

So I have decided to cut down on my blogging and blog reading. I will be taking some blogs off my regular reading list, and perhaps also my blogroll. And I will be posting less often here, as already seen this week. But I won’t go away completely.

For the same reason I have also decided not to attend the Godblogs event next week.

I will continue to read Reimagining Church and to report here on anything interesting I find. I will also be keeping up with and reporting any significant developments relating to Todd Bentley.

At least, this is my current intention. We’ll see how things go.

Godblogs event in London

Tim Thomas of the evangelical alliance has been posting comments on this blog and at least one other about a get-together for bloggers. He doesn’t give the date, which is in fact 23rd September. This is what he does write:

Great blog! We would like to bring to your attention an event we are hosting….

The Evangelical Alliance, specifically Krish Kandiah, is hosting an informal lunch event for Christian bloggers to network with one another and think through a Christ-like approach to blogging. Please find an invitation attached.

The event will begin at 11am and run through until 2.30pm. There will be a £5 charge for the event, which will cover lunch and resources.

We would be extremely grateful if you could let us know whether you are available to attend by Tuesday 16 September.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Also he didn’t include the attachment, which would have been difficult in a comment. But I had already received this notice and the attachment by e-mail.

UPDATE: I have now been sent some new artwork from the Evangelical Alliance to replace the not very wonderful version I put together out of the original attachment which was a Word document.

In case the text above is not visible, here it is in black on white:

Time <11am-2.30pm>
Location <Whitefield House, Kennington, London>
Cost <£5 including lunch and resources>
To register <Email a.lilley@eauk.org by 16 Sept>

This meeting is apparently open to all Christian bloggers. I am not sure yet whether I will be able to attend. If others I know of are attending it might encourage me to do so.

The latest on the former SPCK bookshops

Over a month ago I wrote about the former SPCK bookshops and blogger Dave Walker’s response to a Cease and Desist letter. Since then there has been silence on this matter from Dave Walker, perhaps for legal reasons and perhaps because he was just too busy with the Lambeth Conference and then a holiday to give more time to this.

But there has been plenty of activity from others around the blogosphere, not just from the normal small circle of Christian blogs but from heavyweights like Matt Wardman who are concerned with the implications of what has happened for freedom of speech. Phil Groom’s SPCK/SSG blog has remained the best place to keep up with this matter, and has lots of links to what other people have been writing. Most of the actiivity was in late July, but there has been a steady trickle of new information through August. I salute Phil and also Essex vicar Sam Norton for refusing to comply with the Cease and Desist letters they received – letters which were no more legally enforceable than the paper they weren’t written on, because they were only sent by e-mail.

Phil has recently launched an online petition to save Durham Cathedral Bookshop, once the jewel in the SPCK bookshop chain, from the clutches of SSG. The petition currently has 143 signatures, and could do with more. Please support this petition if you can.

This is not another post about Todd Bentley, but one about one of my posts about Todd. My post Todd Bentley and an angel called Emma has just become the first on this blog to be viewed more than 10,000 times. It has crept past this milestone, just three months after it was first posted, as the number of viewings per week have dropped from 347 in the last full week of July to just 96 last week. This post seems to have attracted much of its traffic in previous months from a Google link on a search for “Todd Bentley”.

In the last week there has been a lot of traffic at this blog relating to Todd Bentley, but the great majority of this has been viewing of my recent posts about Todd, to which the search engines now seem to be linking. The most popular has been Message from Trevor Baker about Todd Bentley, with 781 views in just six days, but seven posts have attracted over 200 views each in the last week.

My second most popular post of all time is Pope Benedict, Bible scholars, and the Antichrist, with 6,595 views, all but a few hundred of which were in a few days in March this year because of a link from a popular site. In third place, perhaps for a bronze medal, is Lakeland revival with Todd Bentley continues with 5,943 views, again mostly from a Google link.

Books for sale – not mine!

Blogger Graham Old has over 1000 Christian books for sale, at prices starting from £1. At least most of the books listed are Christian, although some (such as ones by Don Cupitt) only marginally so. Graham clearly has very broad interests and tastes. He has asked other bloggers to pass on the news, and I am happy to oblige – after taking a look myself first!

These books are in the UK, and so probably not economically available to my American book-loving blogger friends.
